Zu meiner Vorgehensweise: Best practice (deutsch). Und es sei erwähnt, dass ich gleichartige und eher langweilige Änderungen mit einem Bot erledige. So manche in den Augen des Betrachters sinnlose Änderung einfacher Natur wird automatisch irgendwann wieder rückgängig gemacht, sinnvoll erscheinende oder immer wieder durch Dritte aus meiner Sicht eher unwichtige Änderungen werden von mir im Bot aufgenommen, so dass alle meine Bilder davon profitieren. |

Neue Kategorien für NRW nach Monat/Jahr
[edit]siehe Flora of North Rhine-Westphalia by month by year, wo die Baum-Kategorien reinrutschen sollten.
Darüberhinaus habe ich angefangen, Eichenbilder aus NRW nach Monat/Jahr unter Fagales in North Rhine-Westphalia by month zu sortieren. Zu Fagales (Buchenartige) gehören außer Eichen noch Birken, Buchen, Erlen, Esskastanien (nicht Rosskastanien!), Hainbuchen und Nussbäume. Im Übrigen könnten alle Eichenbilder auf Landkreise und kreisfreie Städte aufgeteilt werden, ein Anfang ist da ja schon gelegt.
Bei der Gelegenheit noch ein Streitpunkt, bei dem ich es aufgegeben habe, mich einzumischen. Und zwar die "kategorische" Unterordnung der kreisfreien Stadt Aachen in den Landkreis Städteregion Aachen. In Aachen befindet sich zwar die Kreisverwaltung, aber das gilt auch für Heidelberg und den Rhein-Neckar-Kreis was Heidelberg nicht zur Kreisstadt degradiert... - Danke für die Info. Ich passe meinen Bot noch einmal an, er bearbeitet meine vielen Baumbilder. Bisweilen sind schon sehr viele Bilder umsortiert, allerdings maximal auf dem Bundesland als unterstes Level. Die Feinarbeit muss dann hin und wieder von Hand erfolgen. Hab's heute morgen für die bisherigen Bilder gemacht. Was Aachen angeht, sehe ich (lt. Wikipedia) zwar die Sonderstellung der Stadt Aachen, aber sie ist Teil der Städteregion Aachen. Osnabrück hingegen ist nicht Teil des Landkreises Osnabrück, aber Hannover Teil der Region Hannover. Alles komplizierte Sonderregeln. --XRay 💬 17:32, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [1]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [2]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [3][4]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [5]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:) [6]

Administrative division templates for MTN50 maps of Spain
[edit]Hello. First of all, thanks for your work adding templates to the subcategories of this category, to ease navigation between them. If you are not familiar with Spanish administrative divisions, autonomous communities composed of only 1 province (such as the Community of Madrid) are considered both provinces and autonomous communities (that is, they aren't "provinces without an autonomous community": all provinces belong to one). Since no MTN50 maps are currently categorized by province, but by autonomous community, I'll replace the provinces template by the autonomous communities one, for the autonomous communities with only one province. I'll also add the template for the subcategories that don't have it yet. MGeog2022 (talk) 12:41, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Blind template additions
[edit]Hi XRay, I see how much effort you seemingly put in adding templates. But please take a look at the results before blindly adding a template. By now I've seen dozens of examples where you add a template to a category which results in a template where only one single category gets added to the template band, i.e. the category that the template was added to: Either, no other country has a similar category tree yet (See: "Legislative elections of Argentina" --> South America) and cross-border harmonization is currently unlikely and also unwanted (unlike "Elections of Argentina", which is a universal category structure). Or, there is no other country that is even capable to support a similar category tree (see: "OpenStreetMap maps of Poland by gmina" --> Europe, when neither Germany nor France nor Italy have "gmina" subdivisions). Or, the template is confusing one thing for another (like "Maps of the circle of Saxony/Bavaria/Austria" --> Germany/Europe, when the parent category makes evidently clear that these circles are the historical electoral circles of the Holy Roman Empire for over 300 years, not the comparatively short-lived current states/countries.) And those are just a few examples I noticed when you have been adding those templates for at least a month by now. When I just randomly checked your activity just for the last hour yesterday:
- "Ke Kostelíčku/Na Růžku/Pod lipami/U Plovárny streets in the Czech Republic" --> Europe, but only a single entry for each. Have you checked the meaning of the street names? Czech can be translated by a certain search provider, and you might actually find candidates to link. Category:Roads and streets named after mills is a great working example for an international collection of same-meaning streetnames. I guess that "Moulin streets in France" and "Mylly streets in Finland" were also your template inserts, and those are entirely unhelpful when they should all be connected to the parent category "Mill streets by country". Although I guess that needs a CfD.
- "Photographs of Armenia by Shaun Dunphy" --> Europe, but only a single entry, and also a hidden user category.
- "Volcanic systems in Iceland in 2019" --> Europe, but only a single entry. The only other country with a "Volcanic systems in..." is Nicaragua, this is not a standardized category yet.
- "To let signs in the United Kingdom" --> Europe, but only a single entry. Probably because the US calls them "For rent" and Germany calls them "Zu vermieten". Have you checked if similar categories exist, and how they can be standardized?
- "Medical training in Ukraine by region" --> Europe, but only a single entry. Probably because this is an ad-hoc category, that should rather be dealt with by CfD.
- "Art Nouveau furniture in Russia" --> Europe, but only a single entry. Has potential, but have you checked the parent category why Russia is the only nation here, and how more "siblings" can be added for the template?
- "Duple Dartline on Dennis Dart (step entrance) buses in the United Kingdom" --> Europe. I'm speechless. Speechless.
- "Hiking trail 5711 in Slovakia" --> Europe, but only a single entry. The category name is probably supposed to prevent uploaders from the United States to add their images here by mistake. Right now, no other country in the world fits this "scheme", and I would think that uploaders of photos for "Wanderpfad 5711 (Tirol)" would choose a similar scheme for categorization.
- "Causes of erosion in France" --> Europe, but only a single entry. And bad. I'd think this is a CfD+Del candidate.
- "Maria columns with Madonna in the Czech Republic" --> Europe, but only a single entry. Too specific name for standardization, although this could certainly be standardized cross-country. A CfD for the proper name change would be necessary though.
- "Patrimoine du XXe siècle in France by city" --> Europe. Right, speechless again. de:Label Patrimoine du XXe siècle is not a thing I would expect in any other country of Europe.
- "Hearse houses in Sweden" --> Europe, this one has a partner entry for the UK. Hurray. Except, you forgot to add the same template in the UK category.
You're certainly doing good work with good intentions overall, but how do you not stop and consider when noticing any similar irregularities, that seemingly make up a rather high percentage of these template additions? --Enyavar (talk) 00:44, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Enyavar: Thank you for your helpful comments. The changes are quasi semi-automatic. There are errors, but very few. I have spent weeks checking where things have been undone. This has resulted in a huge set of rules that controls categories for which no navigation can be set. It is a calculated error rate of less than 0.1%. Various other errors are also fixed - such as
[[Category:[[Category:.... So it does not happen "blindly". Some user categories were noticed that were not marked as such. I also noticed categories that only have one entry per country. (But then there are at least similar categories elsewhere.) In my opinion, however, the navigation should also be displayed for such categories, as the categories are often simply copied, but the navigation is forgotten. Nevertheless, I will now process your suggestions before making any further changes. --XRay 💬 04:00, 4 July 2024 (UTC) - Just a comment to your examples.
- I've no problem with single entries. But I'll exclude some kind of categories, for example the streets and urban squares.
- "Photographs of Armenia by Shaun Dunphy" not marked as user category. But fixed.
- "Duple Dartline on Dennis Dart (step entrance) buses in the United Kingdom" Hmm, I can't understand your speechlessness.
- "Hiking trail 5711 in Slovakia" I'll check and fix it.

- "Maria columns with Madonna in the Czech Republic" The CfD may be a good solution for this category with mixed titles.
- "Hearse houses in Sweden" IMO "Hearse houses in the United Kingdom" will get the navigation in the future.
- All other are my mistake and will be fixed. As I said: I've no problem with single entries. The categories are often used as template for other categories. So the navigation will be added automatically. Otherwise the navigation will be forgotten. But a good solution will be to show the navigation only if there are at least two entries. - So, ich antworte mal in deutscher Sprache. Das fällt mir sowieso leichter. Die genannten Fehler habe ich behoben oder bin gerade noch dabei. Es ist leider so, dass immer mal etwas nicht passt, auch bei sehr langer Vorbereitungszeit. Es war schon sehr erstaunlich, wie viele seltsame Kategorien es gibt. Gerade bei der manuellen Sichtung sind mir ein paar durchgerutscht, ein Nachteil manueller Arbeit. Ich werde aber auch weiter nach Auffälligkeiten suchen. Ich freue mich, dass es sehr viele positive Rückmeldungen gab. Beim ersten Versuch vor ein paar Jahren war die Fehlerquote deutlich höher gewesen. Bei den Kategorien, die in der Navigation nur einen Eintrag haben, gibt es unterschiedliche Meinungen. Das ist wohl so. Heute basiert die Navigation auf einem LUA-Skript und da sollte es leicht sein, dieses Skript so anzupassen, dass die Navigation erst bei mindestens zwei möglichen Links erscheint. Categories by name
[edit]Hi, XRay. I noticed that you added a metacat template to a number of "by name" categories. Most of the ones I saw were not actually metacats, so I have changed them to {{CatCat}}.
An example is Category:Writers from Ternopil Oblast by name. This is not a metacat because each subcategory is for only one person. If this were a metacat, each subcategory would be for multiple people with the same name. An example of a "by name" category that is a metacat is Category:Churches in Illinois by name, because each subcat is for any church with the indicated name (see, for example, Category:Grace churches in Illinois, which includes multiple churches with that name).

Recent changes
- At the Wikimedia Foundation a new task force was formed to replace the disabled Graph with more secure, easy to use, and extensible Chart. You can subscribe to the newsletter to get notified about new project updates and other news about Chart.
- The CampaignEvents extension is now available on Meta-wiki, Igbo Wikipedia, and Swahili Wikipedia, and can be requested on your wiki. This extension helps in managing and making events more visible, giving Event organizers the ability to use tools like the Event registration tool. To learn more about the deployment status and how to request this extension for your wiki, visit the CampaignEvents page on Meta-wiki.
- Editors using the iOS Wikipedia app who have more than 50 edits can now use the Add an Image feature. This feature presents opportunities for small but useful contributions to Wikipedia.
- Thank you to all of the authors who have contributed to MediaWiki Core. As a result of these contributions, the percentage of authors contributing more than 5 patches has increased by 25% since last year, which helps ensure the sustainability of the platform for the Wikimedia projects.
Problems
- A problem with the color of the talkpage tabs always showing as blue, even for non-existent pages which should have been red, affecting the Vector 2022 skin, has been fixed.
Future changes
- The Trust and Safety Product team wants to introduce temporary accounts with as little disruption to tools and workflows as possible. Volunteer developers, including gadget and user-script maintainers, are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. The team has created documentation explaining how to do the update. Learn more.
